Bats have adapted well to our urban and suburban environments. Bats can be found in and around buildings, bridges and other man-made structures.

Historically, bats roosted in caves and large trees with slabs of loose bark or hollowed centers. Today, these ideal roost sites are in short supply so bats are sometimes forced to roost in buildings and homes.

There are approximately 1,100 species of bats world-wide, these creatures account for 20% of mammal species. Their most distinguishing feature is that their forelimbs are developed as wings, making them the only mammals in the world naturally capable of flight.

These flying mammals play a vital role in the ecosystem by pollinating plants and feeding on insects, such as mosquitoes. About 70% of bats are insectivores.

Bats are protected in the United States and should never be killed or harmed.

The most common species of colonizing bats, in Georgia, that enter homes and buildings are the Little Brown Bat | myotis lucifugus, the Big Brown Bat, and the Brazilian Free-Tailed Bat | tadarida brasiliensis.

As with any animal living inside your home or office special care and proper knowledge is required to safely and humanely remove bats from within the structure. Also, special protection is required to prevent contraction of a deadly illness such as histoplasmosis or rabies.

Bats are territorial and they will normally stay in your area once they have been excluded. If the building has not been properly sealed, the bats will enter another opening in the same building. Bats only need an opening that is ¼ inch by 1½ inch, the thickness of a standard number two pencil. If any of your neighbors have these conditions the bats may end up there.

Bat control is a unique field. It requires specialized training and techniques, attention to detail, and extensive knowledge of bat biology and behavior.

Effective bat control requires a full site inspection, and 100% of the structure must be properly sealed, including gaps as small as ¼" wide.

Once the bats are removed exclusion work MUST be done to prevent the bats from returning to the roost site. Any bat control professional should perform this task and provide a warranty with their work once completed.

After the bats have been removed from a structure proper bat guano clean-up is the next step. After a few years, the old guano that has accumalated may develop and grow a fungal spore, histoplasma capsulatum. If the guano is not properly removed occupants of the building may subject themselves to possible contraction of histoplasmosis.
